We get a lot of enquiries about the right temperature to wash your dental uniform at. It’s a great question, as the guidelines on correct washing temperature have changed over the years. Environment issues are a concern too; in general, we’re advised to wash non-clinical wear at 30 degrees these days to minimise energy use.
In summary, the old 2009 HTM-01-05 guidelines advise “machine-washing clothing for ten minutes with a suitable detergent at a minimum temperature of 60C”. However, the updated 2013 HTM-01-05 guidelines refine this further to say “Uniforms and workwear should be washed at the hottest temperature suitable for the fabric”.
Across the dental uniform ranges sold by MyDentalUniform, we would recommend a minimum temperature of 40C, and an ideal temperature of 60C. We would also advise replacing your uniform with a fresh set on at least a daily basis, in line with NHS workwear recommendations.
